Proper Ventilation and Venting
Ventilation calculations is one of the most important, and often overlooked, steps in roofing installation. Simply, if your attic is not ventilated properly, your roof will not last as long as it should.
An attic without adequate ventilation will have issues in all seasons. In the summer, heat buildup in the attic can encourage premature deterioration in the roof decking and shingles (if used). Unwanted heat can also transfer into living areas, making it uncomfortable and reducing energy efficiency. In cold weather, warm air generated by heating sources, laundry, showers, and everyday activities can cause moisture buildup in the attic. Trapped heat and moisture can cause ice dams, dry rot, higher energy costs and even structural damage.
These problems can also occur if venting from bathrooms and kitchens lead into your attic space rather than the outdoors. Although this used to be a common practice, we now know that this will contribute to moisture issues, mold, wet insulation (lowering its R-value) and a shorter roof life.
